CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – Summary of Announcement Complete exam announcements and applications can be obtained at the Port Jervis Civil Service Commission and Port Jervis City Clerk’s Office. This examination is being held to establish an eligible list in the above title which will be used to fill Police Officer positions in the City of Port Jervis Police Department. Starting salary range for Police Officer –Recruit positions is approximately $49,000/annually. A $25.00 non-refundable application processing fee is required for each separately numbered examination for which you apply. The required fee must accompany your application. Check or money order payable to the Port Jervis Civil Service Commission must accompany application. Do Not Send Cash. Residency Requirements: Police Officer candidates must be legal residents of Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, Pike or Sussex County for at least four months prior to written examination. At time of appointment, you must be a NYS resident and must establish a residence in accordance with the Port Jervis City Charter.. Distinguishing Features of the Class: The duties consist primarily of routine patrol tasks, assisting in the investigation of criminal offenses, and the apprehension of criminals. A Police Officer, whether on patrol or special assignment, works under the general supervision of a higher ranking officer. However, there is considerable independent responsibility for exercise of sound judgment in emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications Required for Admission to the Exam – Education: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma and have either: (A) Completion of sixty (60)* college credits at a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university; OR (B) Completion of thirty (30)* college credits and the equivalent of one (1) year of work experience as a police officer, correction officer, police dispatcher, licensed security guard; OR (C) Three (3) years of active military experience in the armed forces of the United States with an honorable discharge; OR (D) An equivalent amount of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
Age Requirements: Candidates must be within six months of their twentieth birthday at the time of examination and at least twenty years of age at the time of appointment. A candidate for examination may not have reached his/her 35th birthday on or before the date of examination. Exception to Age Requirement: For purposes of meeting the above outlined age requirement, all persons who were engaged in military duty as defined in Section 243 of the New York Military Law may deduct from their actual age the length of time spent in such military duty, provided the total deduction does not exceed six (6) years.
Citizenship Requirement: United States citizenship is required to participate in this examination. Subject of the Examination – (Police Entrance Series) a written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
– USE OF CALCULATORS IS PROHIBITED FOR THIS EXAMINATION – The rating key for this examination will be established by the New York State Civil Service Commission prior to the date of the test, upon recommendation of a committee of police experts who will review all the questions for appropriateness and the key answers for correctness. There will be no review of the questions by candidates. This committee was selected with the assistance and endorsement of the Police Conference of New York, Inc., the New York State Association of PBA’s, Inc., and the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, Inc.
