
Port Jervis Police Department Announces 2025 Police Officer Examination
PORT JERVIS, NY – The Port Jervis Police Department is pleased to announce that its annual Civil Service Examination will be held on September 20, 2025. This is an opportunity for dedicated individuals to serve the Port Jervis community.
About the Exam
The Civil Service Examination is the first step for anyone looking to become a police officer.
The fee to apply for Port Jervis’ Civil Service Examination is $35.00. We encourage all interested individuals to regularly check the Port Jervis Police Department’s website for the most up-to-date information and any notifications about the exam. Important updates and information can also be found on the Port Jervis Police Facebook page.
To help candidates succeed, all individuals who register to complete the exam will receive a free Cooper Standard training session designed to prepare applicants for the physical agility portion of the test.

Minimum Qualifications to Take the Exam
To be eligible to take the Civil Service Examination, candidates must meet certain requirements. All applicants must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma. Candidates must also meet one of the following requirements:
- A. Have finished sixty (60) college credit hours from a college or university that is recognized by a regional organization or registered with New York State; OR
- B. Have finished thirty (30) college credit hours from a college or university that is recognized by a regional organization or registered with New York State, AND have worked full-time for at least one (1) year as a police officer, corrections officer, police dispatcher, or a licensed security guard; OR
- C. Have three (3) years of active military experience and received an honorable discharge; OR
- D. Have an amount of training and experience that is equal to the requirements outlined in options A and B above.
All police officer candidates must have a valid New York State driver’s license and must be citizens of the United States to participate in this examination.
Residence Requirements: Candidates must have lived legally in one of the following counties for at least four (4) months before the date of the written examination: Orange, Ulster, Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Pike, Sullivan, or Sussex County.
Age Requirements: Candidates must be within six (6) months of their twentieth (20th) birthday at the time of the examination and must be at least twenty (20) years old when appointed as an officer. Candidates cannot have reached their 35th birthday on or before the date of the examination.
