FREE PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK PROGRAM

When: April 29th, 2017  FROM 10AM-2PM

Where: PORT JERVIS CITY POLICE HEADQUARTERS

On April 29th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Port Jervis City Police Department in partnership with Operation PJ PRIDE Community Drug Abuse Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will provide the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to the Port Jervis City Police Department located at 20 Hammond Street, Port Jervis, NY for safe collection and disposal.  The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

This drug abuse prevention initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet pose potential safety and health hazards to our environment.

The Port Jervis City Police is proud to partner with the Operation PJ PRIDE Community Drug Abuse Task Force and the DEA to participate in this important crime prevention program.  Residents are encouraged to transport their substances in packaging that is clearly marked “drug disposal” while delivering these substances to police headquarters.
