Robbery-Kidnapping – Police Pursuit
On August 3rd, 2018, at approximately 12:30am, Port Jervis City Police Officers responded to an emergency 911 call reporting a 67-year-old male was assaulted and robbed in the parking lot of a senior housing complex located at 230 Jersey Avenue in the City of Port Jervis.
Officers arrived at the scene and learned that the victim had parked his motor vehicle outside the apartment complex where he was confronted by two male subjects, one being armed with a silver handgun. The victim was forcibly robbed of his personal property and then ordered into the trunk of his motor vehicle. The victim tried to resist and was subsequently assaulted by both suspects who struck him with the pistol and with their hands.
The suspects forced the victim inside the vehicle trunk and stole the victim’s 2015 Subaru. The victim was able to free himself from the trunk utilizing an emergency trunk release while the suspects were driving the vehicle from the lot and fled the scene to a nearby residence on foot where he reported the incident. The victim who received injuries during this assault was transported to Bon Secours Community Hospital for emergency treatment.
A bulletin was broadcast to area law enforcement agencies and the stolen vehicle was observed at approximately 1:38 am by Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies on Rt. 211 in the Town of Wallkill. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle who failed to comply and pursued the vehicle for approximately five miles into the Town of Montgomery where deputies apprehended two suspects, Tranelle Drake age 28 of 63 King Street, Port Jervis and Justin White, age 28, of 50 Orange Street, Port Jervis, after the suspects crashed the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Town of Wallkill Police Department, Town of Montgomery Police and New York State Police.
The suspects were turned over to Port Jervis Detectives who charged both defendants as follows:
Robbery in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree, both Class B felonies, 3 counts of Robbery in the 2nd Degree, a Class C Felony, Assault in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree and Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, all Class D Felonies.
Defendant, Tranelle Drake, was further charged with being a Fugitive from Justice for a warrant issued by the State of Pennsylvania for a violation of Parole.
Additional charges are pending by the Orange County Sheriff Office resulting from the pursuit and possession of the stolen motor vehicle.
The defendants were held in the Port Jervis Lock-up and later arraigned in Port Jervis City Court where they were remanded to Orange County Jail without bail pending Grand Jury evaluation.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting this case.
